Extra virgin olive oil is an essential ingredient of the Mediterranean diet, which has become a model to follow in preventive medicine. This product possesses many positive effects that range from skin care and improvement to the prevention of some types of cancer.

Some of the beneficial effects of extra virgin olive oil are:

It helps prevent arteriosclerosis and its associated risks: hypertension, myocardial infarct, heart failure, kidney failure and brain hemorrhages. According to Prof. Francisco Large Covián, founder of the Spanish Association for Nutrition, "countries where olive oil is virtually the only dietary fat register the lowest rates of death by coronary cardiac disease ".

Current medical research reveals the efficacy of the Mediterranean diet in the prevention of secondary coronary events and the positive influence of olive oil on the depression and frame of mind associated with these events.

It lowers “bad” cholesterol preventing it from accumulating in the arteries and increases “good” cholesterol.

It has beneficial effects in cases of gastritis and gastro-duodenal ulcers and is a mild laxative.

A diet rich in olive oil is a good dietary alternative for the diabetic patient, and its use can also help prevent or delay the onset of diabetes. Olive oil improves metabolism and lowers glucose levels. These added to its beneficial effects on the circulatory system and lipid profile, improves the quality of life of the diabetic patient.

Due to its antioxidants, extra virgin olive oil protects and strengthens the skin and other tissues, diminishing the signs of aging. It also protects the body against tumors. Most of the relevant research in this respect has been conducted on breast, prostate, colo-rectal and uterine cancers.

It helps to fight obesity. It has been shown that a diet rich in olive oil facilitates the loss of weight in a more lasting form than a low fat diet.

Its use during pregnancy and lactation plays a key role in the development of the fetus and subsequent growth of the infant due to the Vitamin E it contributes.

It also has anti-inflammatory properties.
